COLBIE CAILLAT

Age: 29

Occupation: Award-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist

We had the opportunity to sit down with a girl whose RAW face is everywhere right now.  Colbie Caillat released her latest song, Try recently and with over 9 million views it’s message clearly resonates with people around the world.  “This song is not to say that we should never wear makeup, but to say that, sometimes, it’s okay not to,” says Colbie. We absolutely love it (obviously!) and are thrilled to have been able to collaborate with her for the songs’ lyric video

What is one thing you love about yourself physically and one thing you love about yourself in general?

I love that I’m tall. I used to be embarrassed of my height when I was younger ’cause I was taller than all the boys. Now I think it’s rad being tall. I love that I bring lots of people together. Every one of my friends from different groups, from different parts of the world, are now all friends. It’s really amazing and makes me so happy.

ColbieMakeupWe all have moments when we don’t feel our best and for some reason we tend to get stuck on the aspects of ourselves that we don’t really like. Let’s switch it up. When do you feel most beautiful?

When I’ve just washed my hair, it’s air-dried by the wind and the sun, tanned skin from being outside, wearing no make-up, wearing something effortless and comfortable.

In your eyes, who is the most beautiful woman in the world?

A woman who is comfortable in her own skin. Who doesn’t try hard, but still puts in effort to stay healthy and express her style. I’ve met lots of women like this and it’s inspiring.

You wrote your song “Try” after feeling some pressure from your label to dress sexier.  Instead of following the path of many other stars you stood your ground and spoke out about it in a big way through your music. I’m sure at times it seems like it would be easier to just follow the crowd. What holds you back from using your sexuality to get people’s attention? It seems like everyone is doing it…

That’s always been a hard one for me. Sometimes in the past I haven’t been strong enough to stand my ground. It is fun to feel sexy and women tend to get more compliments while wearing less clothing. I’m all for being sexy and wearing what you wanna wear if you own it. In Hawaii I cruise around town in a bikini all day every day. When I go out in L.A. sometimes I love wearing little black dresses that show possibly too much leg and wear really high heels. Makeup and hair fully done, tons of jewelry. It’s fun. But for me, it’s about dressing that way when I feel like it, not because I have to just to sell more records. I saw Erykah Badu in concert and she wore baggy yellow sweat pants, a red sweat shirt, 5-inch tall black stilettos and a big floppy hat. Honestly she never looked so good and every one of us wanted her outfit. It’s because she owned that stage and is so comfortable in her own skin.

At this point, we’ve all seen your beautiful, make-up free face all over the internet.  Would you ever do a cover shoot raw, with no make-up, Photoshop or filters?

Absolutely. Any day. I’m always cruising around town, at the lake or beach, hiking, chillin’ at home, grocery shopping with no make-up on, hair in a messy bun. That’s me every day and I’m not afraid for people to see me that way. I’m proud of it. It feels good to be yourself.
For my official music video for “Try”, at the end I am completely raw, no make-up, no touch-ups, no Photoshop, hair dried on it’s own. It was liberating. I also still enjoy getting all done up and fancy for things, but the key is not to feel like you have to.
