Occupation: plus size model

Describe yourself in under 100 words.

A plus size model and body positive activist. Constantly working to better myself. Lover of penguins, shoes, wine, traveling, cooking, and being with the ones I love most.

What is your definition of ‘beautiful’?

Beauty can be defined in so many ways. Beauty comes from the inside. So much emphasis is put on outer beauty, and while pretty hair, makeup, and clothes can make us feel beautiful, what REALLY makes us beautiful is what is on the inside. Our personalities, our confidence, our kindness and thoughtfulness, is what makes us shine.

When do you feel most beautiful?

When I am happy, with the ones I love.  That might be waking up on a Sunday with my boyfriend, or having dinner with my family.  When I am at my happiest, I feel the most beautiful.

What is the most hurtful thing someone has said to you?  What would you like to say to that person in response?

I am often criticized on my Facebook page.  Mostly by women, who call me fat, or say that I should eat less and take better care of myself, or that I am a disgusting pig. I also know of quite a few nasty rumors that have been spread about me by my peers. Of course, because I am human, it hurts. However, now I try to remember that the people who say these things are projecting their own negative feelings upon me and that actually has nothing to do with me. People on my Facebook or who hear the rumors, I would like to think don’t hear those things, and think poorly of me, but rather question the people saying them. We all need to remember that everyone is someone’s daughter, mother, wife, friend.  We need to spread love. We don’t have to like everything everyone does, but if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

What would you like to say to people who say that curvy women are unhealthy/lazy/lack self-control?

Weightism is one of the only socially acceptable forms of discrimination left in North America. It needs to stop. Why do people assume that because someone is plus size, that they do not take care of themselves? We don’t see someone in a wheelchair and assume they drove recklessly?

Personally, my weight fluctuates a lot. However, I have never been a small girl. My smallest, I was a size 8, and I was NOT healthy. I was hardly eating, working out ALL the time, and I STILL got flack for my weight, and was so self-conscious. Right now, I am a size 12, and am FAR more confident. I work out as often as possible, eat healthy but don’t deprive myself, and generally live a very happy, healthy life! I would much rather be this size and weight and be happy in life, then be smaller and be miserable. We need to remember not to judge people. We don’t know their stories and can’t judge a person by how they look. We have no idea what they are going through. They could have a thyroid problem, or a slow metabolism. They could be perfectly healthy, and just have a bigger frame. They could be unhealthy, but that’s not for society to judge! That is THEIR business!

What is your philosophy in life?

Spread love and kindness.  Everything I do in life is with a purpose of making my life better and making the people I care about happy.

What inspires you?

I am constantly inspired. I am inspired by walks on a summer evening, and visiting with my grandma (who is 98 now, but was a model as well in her 20’s) and the rest of my amazing family. I am inspired by discovering a new favorite song, or hearing children’s laughter. I am inspired by human kindness and generosity. Most of all, I am inspired by the love between my amazing man, and my family and friends.
